Sponsored by: Janke CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 99-033 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, SUPPORTING FULL FUNDING FOR THE LAND AND WATER CONSERVATION FUND PROGRAM WHEREAS, more than 367 projects have been constructed in 45 different Alaskan communities and on State Parks lands since the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) was established in 1965; and WHEREAS, thanks to local and state matching funds, the $28 million dollars that Alaska has received from the L WCF Stateside program has enabled more than $55 million dollars worth of public recreation facilities to be constructed; and WHEREAS, the L WCF Stateside program is an integral component in meeting the outdoor recreation needs of our state and local residents and provides essential support to our tourism industry; and WHEREAS, Seward has utilized a portion of these L WCF funds to construct a restroom / shower house, pavilion wind walls, Obihiro park, an outdoor volleyball court, horseshoes area, adult recreation area, provided for landscaping, provided ADA access to Two Lakes Park, will construct a gazebo, improve trails and purchase private lots within the park boundary - all of which serves the recreation needs of our residents and thousands of visitors each year; and WHEREAS, Seward could benefit from LWCF with a listing of future possible projects such as Centennial Park, restrooms, ballfields, an ice rink and trial improvements; and WHEREAS, no Stateside program has been available to Alaskan communities since 1995; and WHEREAS, Senator Frank Murkowski has introduced the Reinvestment and Environmental Restoration Act (S 25) which would provide $340 million for the Stateside L WCF program; and WHEREAS, Representative Don Young has introduced the Conservation and Reinvestment Act of 1999 (HR 701) which would provide $383 million.fonhe Statesi<ie LWCF program; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION NO. 99-033 Section 1. The City of Seward thanks Senator Murkowski and Congressman Young for their leadership in introducing these important bills. Section 2. The City of Seward urges full funding for the Stateside Land and Water Conservation Fund program. Section 3. Individuals are encouraged to write letters of support for LWCF to our Alaska Congressional Delegation. Section 4. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
