RESOLUTION 99-119
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, ADOPTING THE SEWARD HIGHWAY CORRIDOR PARTNER-
SHIP PLAN AS A PART OF THE SEWARD STRATEGIC PLAN
WHEREAS, the Seward Highway is a remarkable resource providing unparalleled views,
natural features, and cultural resources; and
WHEREAS, the Seward Highway was designated as a National Forest Scenic Byway and
as an Alaska Scenic Highway in 1993; and
WHEREAS, in 1998 the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administra-
tion, designated the Seward Highway as a National Scenic Byway; and
WHEREAS, the Seward Highway provides visitors and residents alike with a series of
diverse landscapes and experiences found nowhere else in the nation; and
WHEREAS, approximately 77 miles ofthe 127 mile corridor traverse the Kenai Peninsula
Borough with its southern gateway at Mile 0 within the City of Seward; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities in cooperation
with other federal, state and local agencies, including the City of Seward, developed the Seward
Highway Corridor Partnership Plan; and
WHEREAS, the Plan makes recommendations, not policies, and represents a model by
which natural resources can be conserved and economic development sustained; and
WHEREAS, the Seward Strategic Plan identifies the need to establish an attractive highway
corridor from Mile 0-8 of the Seward Highway:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The April 1998 Seward Highway Corridor Partnership Plan is hereby adopted
as a part of the Seward Strategic Plan.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council ofthe city of Seward, Alaska, this 23 day
of August, 1999.
