CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 79-11
A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE U.S. FOREST SERVICE
TO PROVIDE TIMBER TO SUPPLY THE NEEDS OF
THE INDUSTRY IN SOUTH CENTRAL ALASKA
WHEREAS, Kenai Lumber Company owns and operates a sawmill ~n
Seward, and
WHEREAS, this sawmill contributes substantially to the economy
of Seward, with an estimated 1979 payroll of $1,000,000 and
WHEREAS, Kenai Lumber Company is dependent on timber secured
from the Chugach National Forest, and
WHEREAS, the U. S. Forest Service has made no timber sales ~n
the Chugach National Forest since 1976, and
WHEREAS, the lack of timber sales places Kenai Lumber Company
~n a position where the Seward mill will exhaust its log supply and close
by March 1980,
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that the U.S. Forest Service is requested, notwithstanding
the Final Environmental Statement for RARE II, to advertise those areas in
the Prince William Sound region ready for sale, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the U. S. Forest Service is requested
to begin planning and preparation of future sales in the Prince William
Sound region so as to supply the needs of the timber industry in South-
central Alaska on a sustained basis.
