RESOLUTION NO. 79-20
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF KENAI
LUMBER COMPANY TO ACQUIRE; STATE TIMBER PURSUANT
TO AS38.05.118
WHEREAS, Kenai Lumber Company is a major contributor to
the economy of Seward; and
WHEREAS, the Company is currently dependant on timber
secured from the Chugach National Forest; and
WHEREAS, no timber sales have been made from the Chugach
National Forest since 1976; and
WHEREAS, the RARE II process greatly reduces the possibil-
ity of National Forest timber sales available in time to
meet the needs of the Company; and
WHEREAS, the Company currently has only enough logs to
supply its needs until mid 1980; and
WHEREAS, AS38.05~18 provides authority to the Department
of Natural Resources to negotiate timber sales in areas of high
unemployment; and
WHEREAS, Seward is an area of high unemployment, with an
underutilized timber manufacturing capacity and an underutilized
allowable cut of State timber; and
WHEREAS, the Company is seeking State timber pursuant to
AS38.05.118; and
WHEREAS, the Company, if successful, will be assured of
an adequate supply of timber for several years of operation;
NO~ THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA that the Department of Natural Resources
is requested to provide timber to Kenai Lumber Company under the
provisions of AS38.05.118
