CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 99-150
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, SUPPORTING SEWARD AS THE HOMEPORT FOR MN
TUSTUMENA
WHEREAS, the Alaska Marine Highway system is a vital economic transportation link for
the City of Seward; and
WHEREAS, expanding Western service and eliminating Seward would actually increase
operating costs while eliminating a vital economic link between Kodiak, Homer, Prince William
Sound and other areas and Seward; and
WHEREAS, the intermodal transportation benefits anc~ options of rail, sea, air and land
enjoyed by the Alaska Marine Highway System customer would be disrupted, which is in direct
conflict with the Nation's transportation policy and vision of seamlessly linking all forms of
transportation systems to the benefit of all citizens; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Marine Highway has committed to using the Railway dock facility
in Seward and a multi-million dollar improvement to that facility has incorporated the marine highway
system; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Railroad Corporation, in cooperation with the City of Seward has
committed to development plans including, and making special provisions for, the M/V
TUSTUMENA; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Vocational Technical Center in Seward has a Marine department,
which will house a state of the art ship simulator where professional mariners may obtain or renew
their licenses in keeping with international standards, which is in direct support of the marine industry
and the Alaska Marine Highway System;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The City Council actively and aggressively opposes any changes in the homeport
of the M/V TUSTUMENA and any proposed decrease or elimination of service to Seward.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward, Alaska, this 15th day
of November 1999.
