RESOLUTION NO. 96-034
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, REQUESTING THE KENAI PENINSULA
BOROUGH SCHOOL DISTRICT REQUIRE THE STUDY OF ALASKA
HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT PRIOR TO HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION
WHEREAS, the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District has the authority to establish
graduation requirements for the district; and
WHEREAS, the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District graduation requirements
committee is in the process of reviewing the local high school graduation requirements; and
WHEREAS, knowledge of one's own state's history and government is fundamental to
informed and effective participation in state and local affairs; and
WHEREAS, the Seward Historic Preservation Commission recommended this resolution
to the City Council for approval;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District is hereby requested to require the
successful completion of at least one semester in the study of Alaska history and government prior
to graduation from high school.
Section 2. Copies of this resolution shall be forwarded to Dr. Walter Bromenschenkel, Kenai
Peninsula Borough School District Superintendent, and to the Kenai Peninsula Borough School
District Graduation Requirements Committee.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this 11 th
day of March, 1996.
