CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 96-083
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, ADOPTING THE SEWARD
COMMUNITY CEMETERIES MANAGEMENT PLAN
WHEREAS, the City of Seward, Pioneers of Alaska, Oddfellows, Masons and American
Legion each own or operate cemeteries within the City; and
WHEREAS, there are no established codes authorizing the management, nor regulations
guiding the use, of the city cemetery; and
WHEREAS, there are no burial permits required for use of the cemetery which has resulted
in inadequate mapping and minimal burial records associated with the community's cemeteries; and
WHEREAS, a properly managed and maintained cemetery reflects well on the community's
image and provides peace of mind for friends and family of the deceased; and
WHEREAS, it is in the public interest to develop and implement adequate procedures to
ensure the proper long term management of the community's cemeteries; and
WHEREAS, a cemetery action plan has evolved from numerous public hearings, meetings
with cemetery owners, direct contact with cemetery users and other interested parties; and
WHEREAS, the Seward Planning and Zoning Commission and the Seward Historic
Preservation Commission have reviewed the plan and recommend it to the City Council for
adoption;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The Seward Community Cemeteries Management Action Plan is hereby adopted
and made a part of the Seward Comprehensive Plan.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this 8th day
ofJuly, 1996.
