Sponsored by: Schaefermeyer CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION NO. 92-059 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, SUPPORTING STATE FUNDING FOR PUFFIN BROADCASTING WHEREAS, Seward has no local public broadcasting outlet, thus no locally based programming by public broadcasting, but receives broadcasting from Anchorage; and WHEREAS, although the local AM station carries national and international news, it does not carry local news; and WHEREAS, the local newspaper is published only once each week; and WHEREAS, the growing Seward community would benefit greatly from a daily news source; and WHEREAS, Seward is centrally located for nearby smaller communities and more isolated residents of the East Kenai Peninsula; and WHEREAS, having access to local programming would provide a great service to regional residents as well as to those within Seward's city limits; and WHEREAS, because of the mountainous terrain of the Kenai Peninsula, the east side of the peninsula cannot receive broadcasts from neighboring peninsula communities located nearly 100 miles away; and WHEREAS, the state of Alaska and the Eastern Kenai Peninsula are prone to disasters such as floods, earthquakes and tsunamis; and WHEREAS, in the event of disaster, radio signals from Anchorage would not be available, and a locally-based and operated public radio station would be vital to life and property; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: Section 1. The city of Seward hereby supports the establishment of Puffin Broadcasting, Inc.' s KSRD-FM local broadcasts to provide local discussion on regional issues, dissemination of local and governmental information and regional news, regional disaster and other emergency news, and instruction. . . CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION NO. 92-059 Section 2. The city of Seward encourages the state of Alaska to continue to provide funding for the Seward facility to receive and transmit Anchorage-based broadcasts. Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this 27th day of April, 1992.
