Sponsored by: Cripps CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION NO. 92-075 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, URGING RECONSIDERATION OF THE PROPOSED CLOSURE OF THE WILDWOOD CORRECTIONAL FACILITY IN KENAI WHEREAS, the Alaska Department of Corrections proposes the closure of the Wildwood Correctional Facility in Kenai; and WHEREAS, the proposed closure may result in the loss of over sixty jobs on the Kenai Peninsula; and WHEREAS, several oil platforms in Cook Inlet have shut down in the past year and projections for commercial fishing over the next several years are not encouraging; and WHEREAS, the proposed closure would affect employees at Spring Creek Correctional Center as well as Wildwood and other facilities throughout the state; and WHEREAS, the Wildwood Correctional Facility is one of the most cost effective correctioinal institutions in Alaska; and WHEREAS, the social impact on prisoners being separated from families and social support networks will harm their rehabilitation; and WHEREAS, a more thorough analysis of the Department of Corrections administrative procedures and the short and long term financial and social implications of the proposed closure should be completed; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: Section 1. The Alaska Department of Corrections is urged to reconsider its proposal to implement closure of the Wildwood Correctional Facility. Section 2. Copies of this resolution shall be sent to Governor Walter J. Hickel, Commissioner Lloyd F. Hames, DOC, Senators Kerttula and Menard and Representative Kubina. Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. . . .
