CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 93-015
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, SUPPORTING THE DEVELOPMENT
OF A SHELLFISH HATCHERY IN SEWARD
WHEREAS, The U. S. Department of Agriculture has selected Seward as a possible
recipient of a grant to assist in the development of a shellfish hatchery; and
WHEREAS, in 1992, Seward was chosen as the preferred site for a shellfish
research center by the Alaska Department of Fish & Game, Fisheries Research &
Enhancement Division; and
WHEREAS, Seward was selected by Chugach Investments Corporation as the
preferred site for a shellfish hatchery in Southcentral Alaska; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Shellfish Growers Association chose Seward as the
preferred site for both a shellfish hatchery and a shellfish research facility; and
WHEREAS, the development of a shellfish hatchery will be beneficial to the
Institute of Marine Science research facility; and
WHEREAS, the communities of Chenega and Tatitlek have initiated major
shellfish mariculture ventures that require research and hatchery support; and
WHEREAS, the shellfish mariculture industry will generate full-time employment
on a year-round basis; and
WHEREAS, the community of Seward supports the development of a shellfish
hatchery that will enhance economic development and the creation of local jobs;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. the City of Seward supports the development of a shellfish hatchery
and research facility.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this
25th day of January, 1993.
