CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 93-043
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, APPROPRIATING FUNDS FOR THE
PURCHASE OF A GIFf TO THE CITY OF OBIHIRO, JAPAN,
TO COMMEMORATE THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE
SISTER CITY RELATIONSHIP
WHEREAS, the city of Seward entered into a Sister City Agreement with the city
of Obihiro, Japan, in 1968; and
WHEREAS, 1993 marks the 25th anniversary of this relationship; and
WHEREAS, during the past 25 years, the two cities have participated in numerous
cultural exchanges and have sponsored a highly successful summer student exchange
program which has fostered good will and friendship between our communities; and
WHEREAS, the city of Obihiro has committed $40,000 to construct a Japanese
gazebo in Seward to commemorate the 25th anniversary celebration and is sending a
delegation of some 50 Japanese citizens to Seward this summer on a special friendship
tour; and
WHEREAS, Obihiro played host to a delegation of 31 Seward residents in
November, 1992, when the city celebrated its 110th anniversary; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate that the city of Seward present an appropriate gift
to the city of Obihiro as a token of the city's high esteem and appreciation for our Sister
City and to commemorate this important anniversary; and
WHEREAS, if funds are appropriated, a local award-winning artist, Jim Ramsdell,
will be asked to create a large wood carving of an eagle clutching a salmon to present to
the Mayor of Obihiro during his visit to Seward in July; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Ramsdell has quoted a price of $5,000 for the carving;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The sum of $5,000 is hereby appropriated from the General Fund-Fund
Balance to the Mayor and Council Promotion Account No. 101-1110-5730.

RESOLUTION NO. 93-043
Section 2. The City Manager is hereby authorized to issue a purchase order in the
amount of $5,000 to James Ramsdell to provide a wood carving as described above.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this
12th day of April, 1993.
