HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes1997-005 , , , Sponsored by: Garzini CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION NO. 97-005 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, AUTHORIZING THE ACQUISITION OF THE ODD FELLOWS CEMETERY TRACT FROM THE RIGHT GRAND WORTHY LODGE OF WASHINGTON, INDEPENDENT ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS, TO BE USED FOR PUBLIC CEMETERY PURPOSES WHEREAS, in 1930 the city acquired USS 1759 as a cemetery reserve from the federal government; and WHEREAS, in 1931 the city transferred a one acre portion of this property to the Resurrection Lodge No. A-7, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, to be used as a fraternal cemetery; and WHEREAS, there are no longer any active Odd Fellows lodges remaining in Alaska, the last burial activity in the Odd Fellows Cemetery took place nearly 20 years ago, and the site is more than three-quarters vacant; and WHEREAS, there is a need in the community for more public cemetery space; and WHEREAS, the Right Grand Worthy Lodge of Washington, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, as the successors in interest to the Alaska Odd Fellows lodges, has agreed to deed the Odd Fellows Cemetery Tract back to the city for public burial purposes; and WHEREAS, a public hearing on the proposed acquisition of the subject property has been held in accordance with the provisions of the Seward City Code; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: Section 1. The City Manager is hereby authorized to execute the Quit Claim Deed dated December 2, 1996, transferring the one-acre Odd Fellows Cemetery Tract from the Right Grand Worthy Lodge of Washington, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, to the City of Seward for public cemetery purposes. A copy of the deed is attached and incorporated herein by reference, Section 2.
