RESOLUTION NO. 97-040
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, SUPPORTING KENAI PENINSULA BOROUGH ORDINANCE
NO. 97-13, AMENDING THE SALES TAX CODE BY INCREASING THE
SALES TAX CAP TO THE FIRST $1,000 OF ANY SALE, RENT OR
SERVICE TRANSACTION
WHEREAS, the Kenai Peninsula Borough Sales Tax Code was written and enacted in the
1960's and has never been adjusted for inflation; and
WHEREAS, education is a primary responsibility of borough government, and borough
sales tax revenues support Kenai Peninsula schools; and
WHEREAS, it is in the public interest to raise the current sales tax cap to more accurately
reflect the spirit of the original Sales Tax Code by recognizing changing economic conditions and
the effect inflation has had on the economy in the past 30 years; and
WHEREAS, Borough Assembly Member Mike Wiley has sponsored an ordinance amending
the Sales Tax Code by raising the tax cap for computation of the maximum tax due to reflect that
the tax will be applied to the first $1,000 of each separate sale, rent or service transaction;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly is urged to enact Kenai Peninsula
Borough Ordinance No. 97-13, amending KPBC 5.18.430, Sales Tax, by increasing the maximum
tax to the first $1,000 of any sale, rent or service transaction.
Section 2. Copies of this ordinance shall be forwarded to the Kenai Peninsula Borough
Assembly and to KPB Mayor Mike Navarre.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this 10th
day of March, 1997.
