CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 97-057
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, COMMENDING THE NORTHERN EDGE 97 PARTICIPANTS
WHEREAS, from March 17 to 28, 1997, U.S. and Canadian Naval Forces conducted a joint
training exercise designated as Northern Edge 97 in the City of Seward; and
WHEREAS, this exercise was designed to simulate the deployment ofa Joint Task Force and
United Nations troops to a friendly nation for port security and harbor defense; and
WHEREAS, Northern Edge 97 brought nearly 400 American and Canadian troops to the
City to participate in the training exercise; and
WHEREAS, Northern Edge 97 provided increased economic activity to the business
community during what is normally a very slow period; and
WHEREAS, the military personnel proved themselves to be a welcomed addition to the
community during their short stay; and
WHEREAS, both the Northern Edge 97 participants and the City benefitted from the joint
training exercises;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The American and Canadian personnel participating in Northern Edge 97 joint
training exercises in the City of Seward are hereby commended for the professional and courteous
manner in which they carried out their roles in the training activities.
Section 2. The Commander, United States Naval Forces Alaska, is urged to consider Seward
as a site for future military training exercises.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this 12th day
of May, 1997.
