CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 97-078
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, IN SUPPORT OF DEVELOPING THE NORTH PACIFIC
VOLCANO LEARNING CENTER ON THE KENAI PENINSULA
WHEREAS, the west shore of the Kenai Peninsula offers a magnificent, panoramic view
of the Alaskan and Aleutian mountain ranges and some of the most active volcanoes in the world;
and
WHEREAS, four of the most prominent and active volcanoes -- Mt. Illiarnna, Mt. Redoubt,
Mt. Spur and Mt. Augustine -- can be viewed and are routinely accessed from the west shore of the
Kenai Peninsula; and
WHEREAS, there is a continuing need to research and more fully understand the activity
of these volcanoes because of their potential impact on the Kenai Peninsula and Southcentral Alaska;
and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Volcano Observatory maintains equipment on all four of these
volcanoes and actively monitors their activity; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Volcano Observatory actively supports development of the North
Pacific Volcano Learning Center and will relocate their monitoring equipment on Kenai to the
facility; and
WHEREAS, the information gained from monitoring and researching these volcanoes would
be valuable and applicable to the entire State of Alaska; and
WHEREAS, there is continuing need to educate the people of Alaska in how to plan for and
cope with the various forms of volcanic activity and energy releases; and
WHEREAS, there is significant economic benefit to be gained from the construction,
operation and development of a supporting infrastructure for a world class volcano learning center
on the west shore of the Kenai Peninsula; and
WHEREAS, the unemployment rate of approximately 12 percent for the Kenai Peninsula
is one of the highest in Alaska; and

RESOLUTION NO. 97-078
WHEREAS, the establishment of a world class volcano learning center and related visitor
attractions will greatly enhance development of tourism as an industry for the entire Kenai
Peninsula;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The City of Seward supports development and construction of the North Pacific
Volcano Learning Center on the west shore of the Kenai Peninsula.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this 27 day
of May, 1997.
