CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 97-167
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO DISBURSE $20,000
IN FUNDS APPROVED IN FISCAL YEAR 1998 CITY OF SEWARD
OPERATING BUDGET TO THE SEWARD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
FOR THE PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION OF A SEWARD VISITOR
BROCHURE
WHEREAS, the fiscal Year 1998 Operating Budget includes $31,190 in funding for
contributions to the Seward Chamber of Commerce; and
WHEREAS, $11,190 is designated for a community transportation system, and $20,000 is
earmarked for tourism and marketing; and
WHEREAS, these funds were included in the administration's "Option B" budget which
were to be funded from the seasonal sales tax approved in the fY98 Budget; and
WHEREAS, due to a potential for a referendum on the seasonal sales tax on this issue the
administration has postponed spending on items which were to be funded from the seasonal tax
unless directed by Council;
WHEREAS, in order to allow time for tourism and marketing advertising to achieve its goal
of attracting visitors to Seward, the Seward Chamber of Commerce has requested these funds be
allocated prior to waiting for the results of a potential seasonal sales tax referendum; and
WHEREAS, it is the Council's belief that money allocated to the Seward Chamber of
Commerce now to attract visitors to Seward will generate additional tax revenues to the City of
Seward; and
WHEREAS, it is necessary for the Seward Chamber of Commerce to complete a visitor
brochure in time for the next tourism season;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The City Manager is authorized to disburse $20,000 to the Seward Chamber of
Commerce as included in the Fiscal Year 1998 budget.
Section 2, This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this 13th
day of October, 1997.
