CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 97-187
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, SUPPORTING THE RENAMING OF EXIT GLACIER ROAD TO
THE HERMAN LElRER EXIT GLACIER ROAD
WHEREAS, Mr. Herman E. Leirer, a long time resident of Seward, Alaska, died at the age
of80 on November 12,1997; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Leirer arrived in Seward in 1924 and was quite active in the affairs of the
Seward Community; and
WHEREAS, part of that active life in our community was shown in his participation in the
Seward Elks Club, Ducks Unlimited, past Grand President of the Pioneers of Alaska, member of
Seward Igloo 9, the Rotary Club, Seward Chamber of Commerce, and promotion of the
Resurrection River flood project; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Leirer was a major influence and quite instrumental in promoting and
developing the road to Exit Glacier following the 1964 earthquake to help with the tourism industry
in Seward; and
WHEREAS, construction ofthe Road was started in the early 1970's and completed and
dedicated in 1996, and is now part of the Kenai Fjords National Park; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of Mr. Leirer's contribution to the Seward area, and the State of
Alaska, the City of Seward supports the renaming of the Exit Glacier Road to the Herman Leirer Exit
Glacier Road;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The City of Seward supports the renaming of the Exit Glacier Road to the
Herman Leirer Exit Glacier Road.
Section 2, Copies of this resolution shall be supplied to the proper agencies in order to
encourage this road name change.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council ofthe city of Seward, Alaska, this 24 day
of November, 1997.
