CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 98-019
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA PLACING THE SEWARD COMMERCIAL COMPANY BUILD-
ING ON THE SEWARD REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
WHEREAS, City Council Ordinance No. 95-10, established the Seward Register of
Historic Places in order to publicly recognize local cultural resources important in Seward's
history and worthy of preservation; and
WHEREAS, an application to place the Seward Commercial Company building on the
Seward Register of Historic Places was submitted and reviewed by the Historic Preservation
Commission; and
WHEREAS, the building was constructed in 1908 by William Sauers, one of the first
settlers of the Seward area and later a prominent businessman; and
WHEREAS, the Seward Commercial Company opened for business in 1909, and outfitted
many of the prospectors that developed Alaska' s interior gold fields; and
WHEREAS, the structure is located in the midst of the locally designated Downtown
Historic District at 225 Fourth A venue, and was one of the original buildings in the area; and
WHEREAS, this two story, full basement building is of typ ical appearance and structure
as the other historically significant buildings within the Downtown Historic District; and
WHEREAS, at its February 18, 1998 meeting, the Seward Historic Preservation
Commission determined that the Seward Commercial Company building was eligible for listing
on the Seward Register of Historic Places, and recommended that the City Council place the
building on the register; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA that:
Section 1. The City Council hereby places the Seward Commercial Company building 0 n
the Seward Register of Historic Places, as authorized by Seward City Code ~ 15.15.010.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
