HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes2006-066 I I I Sponsored by: Corbridge CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2006-66 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO APPROPRIATE DRUG FORFEITURE FUNDING IN THE AMOUNT OF $548.02 TO THE POLlCE DEPARTMENT FOR DRUG TRAINING, INVESTIGATION AND EQUIPMENT WHEREAS, the City of Seward received drug forfeiture funds from the State of Alaska as a result of a State drug investigation; and WHEREAS, drug forfeiture funds have traditionally been made accessible to the Police Department to offset costs associated with drug training, investigation, and equipment; and WHEREAS, drug enforcement and awareness programs are an ongoing priority for the Police Department; and WHEREAS, providing adequate training is imperative to ensuring police department personnel are given the tools and knowledge to effectively and safely perform their duties to safeguard the community; and WHEREAS, the use of drug forfeiture funds to promote further drug investigations will help advance drug enforcement as one of the Seward Police Department's top priorities; and WHEREAS, equipment purchased could be essential to officer safety or used in the scope of an investigation; and WHEREAS, authorizing the City Manager to appropriate these funds to the police department's budget to be used for drug training, investigation, and equipment will affirm the City's commitment to reducing the number of drug related crimes in our community. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA that: Section 1. Funds in the amount of $548.02 are hereby appropriated from drug forfeiture funds from account no. 101-0000-4420-0275 to the police department operating account no. 101- 1210-5440. Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately. PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward, Alaska, this 22nd day of May, 2006. I I Council Agenda Statement Meeting Date: May 22, 2006 Through: Clark Corbridge, City Manager From: Thomas Clemons, Police Chief Agenda Item: State of Alaska Drug Forfeitures Refund BACKGROUND & JUSTIFICATION: The City of Seward received a refund from the State of Alaska for Drug Forfeitures in the amount of $548.02. As is standard practice, the forfeiture revenues were placed into the General Fund. Traditionally, these funds have been made accessible to the Police Department to offset expenses for drug training, investigations, and equipment. Training is crucial in maintaining knowledgeable and effective personnel, as is having the proper equipment and funds to advance drug investigations. Authorizing the City Manager to direct these funds to be appropriated into the Police Department budget to be used for training, investigations and equipment will affirm the position that the City of Seward is committed to reducing the number of drug related crimes in our community.
