HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
RESOLUTION NO. 22=02
A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION
COMMISSION, RECOMMENDING THAT THE CITY COUNCIL PLACE
THE CAMERON HOUSE ON THE SEWARD REGISTER OF HISTORIC
PLACES
WHEREAS, City Council Ordinance No. 95-10, established the Seward Register of
Historic Places in order to locally recognize properties important in Seward's history; and
WHEREAS, an application to place the Cameron House on the Seward Register of
Historic Places has been prepared for review and recommendation to the City Council; and
WHEREAS, the Cameron House, also known as the Romig House, was constructed in
1905 on Lots 9 and 10, Block 25, Original Townsite of Seward, by Alaska Central Railway
Engineer J.B. Cameron; and
WHEREAS, the Cameron House is located within what is known as "Millionaires Row, "
a group of six homes built in 1905 by and for Alaska Central Railway department heads; and
WHEREAS, the building is significant for its association with the founding of Seward, and
the development of the Alaska Central Railway; and
WHEREAS, the structure is also historically significant for its use as Seward's first
hospital facility beginning in 1911.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation
Commission that:
Section 1. The Cameron House is eligible for placement on the Seward Register of
Historic Places as a property associated with historic events or persons of local and state
significance.
Section 2. It is hereby recommended that the City Council place the Cameron House on
the Seward Register of Historic Places.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
