HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes1998-048 I I I Sponsored by: Satin CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION NO. 98-048 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, ENDORSING THE NATIONAL "TEAMING WITH WILDLIFE" INITIATIVE AND URGING ALASKA'S CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION TO GIVE ITS FULL SUPPORT FOR THIS INITIATIVE WHEREAS, tourism is a major component of Seward's economy; WHEREAS, most visitors who travel to Alaska cite the opportunity to view wildlife and spectacular scenery as primary reasons for their travel; and WHEREAS, demand for visitor services and facilities is growing dramatically, whle State and Federal funding is decreasing; and WHEREAS, proposed Federal "Teaming With Wildlife" legislation would provide Alaska with up to $17.5 million annually for fish and wildlife-related recreation, education, and conservation programs; and WHEREAS, these funds could be used to construct and maintain nature centers, trails, fish and wildlife viewing platforms, interpretive signs, publications and other services and facilities for both residents and visitors through grants to local government and other programs; and WHEREAS, these services and facilities would support Seward's expanding visitor industry and enhance the quality oflife for residents; and WHEREAS, over 400 Alaskan businesses, individuals and organizations have joined over 1800 national groups to endorse "Teaming With Wildlife: initiative, including Governor Knowles, all former living Alaska Governors, the Alaska Visitors Association, Cornmonwealth North, National Bank of Alaska, Chugach State Park Citizens Advisory Board, The Alaska Land Managers' Forum, National Education Association-Alaska Chapter, Alaska Audubon Society, Alaska Sport Fishing Association, Ducks Unlimited-Alaska Chapter, and other conservation, recreation, and education groups; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: Section 1. The City Council hereby approves Resolution 98-048, endorsing the "Teaming with Wildlife" initiative and urges Alaska's Congressional Delegation to give its full support for this initiative. CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION NO. 98-048 Section 2. A copy ofthis resolution shall be forwarded to Alaska's Senator Stevens, Senator Murkowski, Representative Young, and to the Alaska Municipal League. Section. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this 27th day of April, 1998.
