HomeMy WebLinkAboutOrd1985-551 . . . e e CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA ORDINANCE NO. 551 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, AMENDING CHAPTER 17 OF THE SEWARD CITY CODE TO PROVIDE THAT THE CITY OF SEWARD DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE ON THE BASIS OF HANDICAP IN ITS EMPLOYMENT PRACTICES WHEREAS, the Federal General Revenue Sharing Program prohibits a city from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, handicapped status or age in any program or activity funded with revenue sharing funds; and WHEREAS, the Office of Revenue Sharing assumes that all City programs and activities are funded in whole or in part with Federal Shared Revenue funds; and WHEREAS, the City of Seward has a policy of not discriminating against the handicapped in the delivery of its programs and activities; and WHEREAS, the City Personnel Code does not contain a statement that the City does not discriminate on the basis of handicapped status; NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, HEREBY ORDAINS that: Section 1. Section 17-1.2(e) of the Seward City Code is hereby amended to read as follows: (e) Assuring fair treatment of applicants and employees in selection, promotion, training and all other aspects of personnel administration without regard to political affiliation, race, national origin, sex, age, handicapped status, or religious creed, and with proper regard for their privacy. Applicants with physical handicaps will be given equal consideration with other applicants for positions in which their handicapped status does not represent an unreasonable barrier to satisfactory performance of duties. Section 2. Section 17-5.1(c) of the Seward City Code is hereby amended to read as follows: (c) Prohibit discrimination because of race, age, handicapped status, politics, religion, sex, national origin or any other merit factor. Appli- cants with physical handicaps will be given equal consideration with other applicants for positions in which their handicapped status does not represent an -1- . . . . .
