HomeMy WebLinkAboutOrd1956-264 ORDINANCE NO. 264 AN ORDINANCE CHANGING THE CONSUMER MONTHLY TELEPHONE RATE CHARGED IN THE CITY OF SEWARD~ ALASKA~ BY THE ALASKA TELE- PHONE CORPORATION. WHEREAS, pursuant to a Notice of Hearing. upon application of the Trustee for the Alaska Telephone Corporation, Richard D. Harris, for an increase in consumer monthly telephone rates charged in the city of Seward, Alaska by the Alaska Telephone Corporation, said hearing was held on the 3rd day of February, 1956, and continued to February 6, 1956, and WHEREAS, the Trustee, Richard D. Harris, presented a verified written statement through Donald Lowell, Manager of the Seward branch of the Alaska Telephone Corporation, and WHEREAS, Donald Lowell presented oral evidence supporting said application, and WHEREAS, no person, corporation, association or individual appeared in opposition to the said application for an increase in rates, and IT APPEARING to the Common Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, that the operating expenses of the Seward branch of the Alaska Telephone Company, at the present time, exceed the monthly revenue; that said operatin expenses include only expense directly chargeable to the Seward operation and consists largely of the essential payroll, and IT FURTHER APPEARING that at the present time, the rates charged do not represent a fair return on investment and that a Twenty (20) percent increase in all consumer monthly rates would represent a more reasonable return on investment, and IT FURTHER APPEARING that a further and more complete showing of actual return of the Alaska Telephone Corporation is adviseable within the near future, NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEW ARD~ ALASKA: That the consumer monthly telephone rates now charged by the Alaska Telephone Corporation in the city of Seward, Alaska, shall be, and they hereb are, increased by Twenty (20) percent on each rate heretofore established; o<.oti That said rates shall be effective on the Htft-day of February, 1956, and That in the discretion of the Common Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, a hearing shall be called at the expiration of Ninety (90) days after the effective date of said rate increase for the purpose of re-examining the rate structure of the Alaska Telephone Corporation in Seward, Alaska, and to make such adjustment of rates as then may be necessary, if any. -.-- --..- -"--,--~,..--....._._- r I The above rate increase is made with no inference as to the existence or non-existence of a bona fide franchise with the Alaska Telephone and Engineering Corporation, but is granted solely to meet the emergency re- quest of the duly appointed court receiver of the Alaska Telephone and Engineering Corporation, or its successor Alaska Telephone Corporation. as a temporary measure.
