Sponsored by: Oates <br />CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA <br />RESOLUTION 2009-030 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, <br />ALASKA, SUPPORTING SEWARll POLICE DF,YARTMENT 'RECOVERY <br />ACT: OFFICE OF JUSTICE PROGRAMS: OFFICE OF JUVENILE <br />JUSTICE AND DELINQUINCY PRF,VENTION FY 09 NATIONAL YOUTH <br />MEN'CORING PROGRAMS" APPLICATION IN THE AMOUNT OF 520,000 <br />WHEREAS, The American Recovery and Rcim~estment Act (ARRA) of 2009 is <br />intended by Congress to stimulate the American economy; and <br />WHEREAS, appropriations have been made to federal agencies through the ARRA <br />in order to help stimulate local economies: and <br />WHEREAS, ARRA presents the City of Seward and Seward Police Department with <br />the opportunity io apply for granted funding, with no match required; and <br />WHEREAS, the Seward Police Department currently has strong DARE, Youth <br />Court, and Junior Police Academy Programs through which local youth mentoring <br />„_ opportunities could be expanded upon; and <br />WHEREAS, the need exists within the community for an incentive based mentoring <br />program that may be a combined effort of these existing programs; and <br />WHEREAS, the Department of Justice, Office ofJustice Programs, Juvenile Justice, <br />and Delinquency Prevention program has $44 million in fiutding available through <br />competitive grants; and <br />WHEREAS, the Recovery Acl: Office of .Tustice Programs: Office of Juvenile <br />Justice and Delinquency Prevention FY 09 National Youth Mentoring Programs grant <br />application is due on April 20, 2009. <br />NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: <br />Section 1: The Seward City Council recognizes the need for strong youth mentoring <br />programs within the community. <br />
