<br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Sponsored by: Janke <br /> <br />CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA <br />RESOLUTION 2001-133 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, <br />ALASKA, SUPPORTING THE ALASKA SEALIFE CENTER'S STATE OF <br />ALASKA MINI-GRANT APPLICATION <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Seward is a community with quality educational resources and <br />facilities that provide academic and personal growth opportunities for citizens of aU ages, with a <br />vision that includes integrating the Seward public schools, University of Alaska, Institute of Marine <br />Science, Alaska Vocational Technical Center, Alaska SeaLife Center, and other such facilities, to <br />maximize resources; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Seward Education Initiative is a community-based group working to <br />improve the educational opportunities for Seward-area residents, with a goal of creating a community <br />that values life-long learning; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS,the need for the Seward Education Initiative grew from a community concern <br />that the children of Seward had decreasing access to a variety of educational and experiential <br />opportunities; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Seward Education Initiative wishes to achieve improved educational <br />opportunities for the populace of Seward by increasing the number of advanced placement and <br />elective courses, apprenticeships for high school students at natural resource agencies, increased <br />number of extracurricular activities (e.g., a marine science and other specialty clubs), and exchange <br />or travel programs with other facilities and communities; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the State of Alaska Department of Community and Economic Development has <br />a grant program offering up to $30,000 for projects that support community economic and <br />development strategies; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Alaska SeaLife Center is submitting a grant application to the Alaska <br />Department of Community and Economic Development to further the goals of the Seward Education <br />Initiative; <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: <br /> <br />Section 1. The Seward City Council supports the Alaska SeaLife Center's State of Alaska <br />Department of Economic Development Mini-Grant application and their effort to assist the Seward <br />Education Initiative to further its goals. <br />
