<br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Sponsored by: Historic Preservation Commission <br /> <br />CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA <br />RESOLUTION 2001-169 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, <br />ALASKA, SUPPORTING THE ADOPTION OF STATE LEGISLATION <br />RELATING TO A HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULUM FOR ALASKA <br />HISTORY <br /> <br />WHEREAS, House Bill No 171 was introduced in the 22nd legislature to develop an Alaska <br />history education curriculum and require that students complete the curriculum as a requirement for <br />high school graduation; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, an education rich in history and government is vital to the development of a <br />representative democracy and a civil society, and knowledge of a person's own state history and <br />government is fundamental to informed and effective participation in state and local affairs; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, an educated Alaska populace with a full appreciation for the history of Alaska <br />will make better decisions for the good of all Alaska citizens, both rural and urban; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Alaska schools are positioned to transmit knowledge of Alaska history to the <br />majority of people who will inhabit Alaska in coming generations; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Seward Historic Preservation Commission recommended this resolution <br />to the City Council for approval. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: <br /> <br />Section 1. The Seward City Council supports the adoption of State legislation which provides <br />for the development of a standards-based Alaska history education curriculum within grades 9 <br />through 12, requires that students complete the curriculum as a requirement for high school <br />graduation, and provides the Alaska school districts with the instructional and financial support <br />needed to put an Alaska history curriculum in place. <br /> <br />Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. <br /> <br />PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward, Alaska, this 10th <br />day of December, 2001. <br />
