<br />Sponsored by Wiley <br /> <br />CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA <br />HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION <br />RESOLUTION NO. ~ <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION <br />COMMISSION, SUPPORTING MITCH SEAVEY'S COMMEMORATIVE SLED DOG <br />RUN OF THE HISTORIC IDITAROD TRAIL BEGINNING AT MILE "0" IN SEWARD <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in the early 1900's gold was discovered in the interior of Alaska and the <br />legendary Seward-Iditarod-Nome trail was established by miners departing from Seward by dog <br />team for the Iditarod and other gold fields; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the route became known as the "Iditarod Trail" and was used to carry mail <br />and freight to the interior until 1919, when mechanized travel became feasible over much of the <br />route; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Seward has been identified as Mile "0" of the National Historic Iditarod <br />Trail; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, on February 25th, 1995, Mitch Seavey will begin the Iditarod Sled Dog <br />Race with a ceremonial start at Mile "0" of the Historic Iditarod Trail to commemorate the <br />historic transportation route; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Seward Historic Preservation Commission recognizes Mitch Seavey's <br />efforts to honor the Historic Iditarod Trail; <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation <br />Commission that: <br /> <br />Section 1. The Seward Historic Preservation Commission supports Mitch Seavey's <br />commemorative dog sled run of the Historic Iditarod Trail beginning at Mile "0" in Seward. <br /> <br />Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. <br /> <br />PASSED AND APPROVED by the Seward Historic Preservation Commission this 15th <br />day of February, 1995. <br />
