<br />Sponsored by Staff <br /> <br />CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA <br />HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION <br />RESOLUTION NO. 28:DZ <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION <br />COMMISSION, RECOMMENDING THAT THE CITY COUNCIL PLACE <br />THE SEWARD COMMERCIAL COMPANY BUILDING ON THE SEWARD <br />REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES <br /> <br />WHEREAS, City Council Ordinance No. 95-10, established the Seward Register of <br />Historic Places in order to locally recognize properties important in Seward's history; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, an application to place the Seward Commercial Company building on the <br />Seward Register of Historic Places has been submitted to the Historic Preservation Commission <br />for review and recommendation to the City Council; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the building was constructed in 1908 by William Sauers, one of the first <br />settlers of the Seward area and later a prominent businessman; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the building opened for business as the Seward Commercial Company in <br />1909 and outfitted many of the prospectors that opened Alaska's interior gold fields; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the building is located in the midst of the locally designated Downtown <br />Historic District and was one of the original buildings in the area; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, this two story, full basement building is of typical appearance and structure <br />as the other historically significant buildings within the Downtown Historic District; <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation <br />Commission that: <br /> <br />Section 1. The Seward Commercial Company building is eligible for placement on the <br />Seward Register of Historic Places as a property associated with historic events or persons of local <br />and state significance. <br /> <br />Section 2. It is hereby recommended that the City Council list the Seward Commercial <br />Company building on the Seward Register of Historic Places. <br /> <br />Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. <br />
