<br />Sponsored by: Staff <br /> <br />CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA <br />RESOLUTION NO. 28:04 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION <br />COMMISSION RECOMMENDING THAT THE CITY COUNCIL PLACE <br />HOBEN PARK ON THE SEWARD REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES <br /> <br />WHEREAS, City Council Ordinance No. 95-10, established the Seward Register of <br />Historic Places in order to provide public recognition of local cultural resources significant in <br />Seward's history and worthy of preservation; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in December of 1996 the Historic Preservation Commission recommended <br />that the City Council place Hoben Park on the Seward Register and submit the completed National <br />Register nomination to the State Historic Preservation Office, however, the City Council failed <br />to take any action on the recommendation; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Hoben Park, located at 401 Railway Avenue on Lot 2, Waterfront Tracts, <br />was built sometime before 1927; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the historic park is owned by the City of Seward; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Alaska SeaLife Center project, Section 106 review, determined that <br />Hoben Park was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places as a designed landscape <br />significant for its association with transportation and recreation in Seward during its period of <br />significance from about 1927 to 1944; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, local recognition of Hoben Park, will assist in raising the public's awareness <br />of the site, and serve to protect the historical integrity of the park; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, at its June 24, 1998 meeting the Historic Preservation Commission reviewed <br />the completed Seward Register of Historic Places application. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation Commission, <br />that: <br /> <br />Section 1. Hoben Park is eligible for placement on the Seward Register of Historic Places <br />as a property associated with historic events or persons of local and state significance. <br /> <br />Section 2. It is hereby recommended that the City Council list Hoben Park on the Seward <br />Register of Historic Places. <br /> <br />Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. <br />
