<br />Sponsored by: Staff <br /> <br />CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA <br />RESOLUTION NO. 99-01 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION <br />COMMISSION RECOMMENDING THAT THE CITY COUNCIL PLACE <br />THE RAY BUILDING (HARRIMAN BANK BUILDING) ON THE SEWARD <br />REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES <br /> <br />WHEREAS, City Council Ordinance No. 95-10, established the Seward Register of Historic <br />Places in order to provide public recognition of local cultural resources significant in Seward's <br />history and worthy of preservation; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, an application to place the Ray Building (Harriman Bank Building) on the <br />Seward Register of Historic Places has been prepared for review and recommendation to the City <br />Council; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, construction ofthe Harriman Bank Building on Lots 21-24, Block 17, Original <br />Townsite of Seward began in April 1916, and the building was occupied that winter; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, from 1916 to 1922 the building served a significant role in the social, economic <br />and real estate development of Seward as a bank; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, between 1924 and 1928 the building served an important educational role in <br />the community as Seward's first high school; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, L.V. Ray, a prominent politician who had served as mayor of Seward, and <br />president of the first territorial legislature, purchased the building in 1939 for a private residence and <br />office; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Ray Building (Harriman Bank Building) is historically significant for its <br />association with the Seward's early development. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOL YED by the Seward Historic Preservation Commission, that: <br /> <br />Section 1. The Ray Building (Harriman Bank Building) is eligible for placement on the <br />Seward Register of Historic Places as a property associated with historic events or persons of local <br />and state significance. <br /> <br />Section 2. It is hereby recommended that the City Council place the Ray Building <br />(Harriman Bank Building) on the Seward Register of Historic Places. <br /> <br />Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. <br />
