<br />Sponsored by Staff <br /> <br />CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA <br />HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION <br />RESOLUTION NO. .28:03 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION <br />COMMISSION, RECOMMENDING THAT THE CITY COUNCIL PLACE <br />THE HISTORIC METHODIST AND LUTHERAN CHURCH (RESURRECT <br />ART COFFEE HOUSE) ON THE SEWARD REGISTER OF HISTORIC <br />PLACES <br /> <br />WHEREAS, City Council Ordinance No. 95-10, established the Seward Register of <br />Historic Places in order to locally recognize properties important in Seward's history; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, an application to place the historic Methodist and Lutheran Church (Resurrect <br />Art Coffee House) on the Seward Register of Historic Places has been prepared for review and <br />recommendation to the City Council; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the church was constructed at the corner of Third Avenue and Church Street <br />on Lots 31-33, Block 15, Original Townsite of Seward, by the Methodist congregation in 1916; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, following its construction, the Seward Methodists occupied the church for <br />29 years; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Lutheran services were held in the building from 1950 to 1993; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the structure is the second oldest church building in Seward, and IS <br />significant for its long association with two of Seward's most active church congregations. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation <br />Commission that: <br /> <br />Section 1. The Historic Methodist and Lutheran Church (Resurrect Art Coffee House) is <br />eligible for placement on the Seward Register of Historic Places as a property associated with <br />historic events or persons of local and state significance. <br /> <br />Section 2. It is hereby recommended that the City Council list the Historic Methodist and <br />Lutheran Church (Resurrect Art Coffee House) building on the Seward Register of Historic <br />Places. <br />
