<br />Sponsored by Staff <br /> <br />CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA <br />HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION <br />RESOLUTION NO. 00-01 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION RECOMMENDING THAT THE ALASKA HISTORICAL <br />COMMISSION AND THE U.S. BOARD ON GEOGRAPHIC NAMES <br />OFFICIALLY NAME THE FOLLOWING GEOGRAPHIC FEATURES: <br />CLEAR CREEK, SAWMILL CREEK, SCHEFFLER CREEK, SPRING <br />CREEK, GODWIN CREEK, BOX CANYON CREEK, MT. EVA, FIRST <br />LAKE, SECOND LAKE, THE LAGOON AND PREACHER POND, WHICH <br />ARE ALL LOCATED WITHIN THE U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY <br />SEWARD (A-7), ALASKA QUADRANGLE. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, there exist inconsistencies among maps, documents, road signs and local <br />usage with regard to these geographic features; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the only way to have a geographic feature name such as a stream, bay, <br />mountain, etc. appear on official published maps is through the Alaska Historical Commission to <br />the U.S. Board on Geographic Names; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, one of the advisory duties of the Seward Historic Preservation Commission <br />is the identification and protection of local historic resources; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, geographic features play an important role in historic preservation by <br />perpetuating names of local events, people, and places; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, having maps with correct names aids back country users in identifying their <br />location for recreation; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, field personnel and incident command center personnel need maps with <br />matching names on geographic features to coordinate emergency services. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation <br />Commission that: <br /> <br />Section 1. It is hereby recommended that the Alaska Historical Commission and the U.S. <br />Board on Geographic Names officially name the following geographic features: <br />A. Clear Creek <br />B. Sawmill Creek <br />C. Scheffler Creek <br />D. Spring Creek <br />E. Godwin Creek <br />F. Box Canyon Creek <br />
