<br />Sponsored by: Historic Preservation Commission <br /> <br />CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA <br />HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION <br />RESOLUTION 2004-03 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION <br />COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, REQUESTING <br />COUNCIL SUPPORT AND APPROVAL OF COMMISSION PRIORITIES <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Seward Historic Preservation Commission wishes to assist the City <br />Council with the ongoing responsibilities it holds as a Certified Local Government, which <br />requires provision for recognition of the historically significant activities, structures and the <br />people who helped build Seward; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Commission has become very active over the past several years and has <br />helped emphasize community spirit and Seward's history by sponsoring numerous off-season <br />events supported and attended by local residents, visitors and guests; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, a few of the events have been: the Seward Red Light District presentation <br />in 2002, the State of Alaska Historical Commission 2002 summer meeting; the Seward <br />Centennial Symposium in 2003; the First Friday Fireside Historical Lecture Series and the "Blast <br />from the Past" celebration in 2004; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Commission has continuously received grants for historic preservation <br />activities, such as training for staff and commissioners in 2002 and 2004, the grant to present the <br />Seward Centennial Symposium, the Historic Structure Report for the Jesse Lee Home, the <br />production of a historic structure website in 2003 and the grant for updating the Seward Historic <br />Preservation Plan has been approved for 2004; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Commission was proud to represent the community by receiving the <br />2003 Esther Billman Award of Excellence from the Alaska Historical Society for the outstanding <br />Seward Centennial programs; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Commission provides recognition each year to an outstanding <br />contributor to Seward's history by awarding the annual Seward Historic Preservation Award; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in order for the Commission to continue to provide this level of service to <br />the community and assistance to the Council, a long range plan for activities is necessary; and <br />
