<br />Sponsored by: Historic Preservation Commission <br /> <br />CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA <br />HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION <br />RESOLUTION 2005-02 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION <br />COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, STATEMENT OF <br />POSITION REGARDING THE PROPOSED VACATION OF <br />WASHINGTON STREET <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the National Park Service has applied for a vacation of a portion of <br />Washington Street to support the proposed Mary Lowell Center; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Seward Planning Commission has approved the vacation request and the <br />request will now be heard by the Kenai Peninsula Borough. If the vacation is approved, the <br />Seward City Council has a thirty day veto period, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Seward Historic Preservation Commission wishes to make a <br />recommendation to the bodies which will be considering this action; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Seward Historic Preservation Commission supports the historical <br />significance of the original grid pattern of the Original Townsite of Seward plat, notarized in <br />1905; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Commission opposes the vacation of Washington Street and wishes to <br />preserve as much of the historic transportation grid as possible; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Commission supports incorporating interpretation of the historic <br />significance of the original downtown Seward grid into the Mary Lowell Center. <br />
