<br />Sponsored by: Staff <br /> <br />CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA <br />HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION <br />RESOLUTION 2006-01 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION <br />COMMISSION, SUPPORTING THE CONCEPT OF THE MARINERS <br />MEMORIAL FOR THE SEWARD SMALL BOAT HARBOR <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the first ship built in Alaska is believed to have been built in the Resurrection <br />Bay area; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the historic settlers of Resurrection Bay all arrived by boat; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the first American pioneer settlers of Seward arrived by steamship; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Seward's history and economy has continued to be directly influenced by its <br />position as an ice-free seaport in south central Alaska; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Seward does not have a memorial honoring those who have risked hazardous <br />sea voyages in the course of building our community and others who lost their lives in our local <br />waters; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the fishing industry has been a main stay of the community for more than a <br />century; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, memorial plaques commemorating local mariners currently do not have a <br />dedicated memorial for display; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Seward needs a good venue for its annual Blessing of the Fleet and other <br />marine-oriented ceremonies, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, a Mariners Memorial will serve as a monument to our maritime history; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Kenai Fjords Yacht Club donated $1 000 (one thousand dollars) in March <br />2004 to start a Mariners' Memorial Fund through the 2003 Seward Centennial non-profit account; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, local organizations and individuals will pursue additional donations and grants <br />to fund the design, construction, and maintenance of a mariners' memorial; <br />
