RESOLUTION 2017-010
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, FOR SEWARD ANIMAL SHELTER IMPROVEMENTS, IN AN
AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $20,000,AND APPROPRIATING FUNDS
WHEREAS,in recent years,there has been expressed interest in plans to relocate the current
animal shelter, leading the City to minimize improvements to the shelter in the hopes of directing
resources to a longer-term solution; and,
WHEREAS, the City has received requests for short-term shelter improvements until a
longer-term solution can be found, and these improvements are needed to ensure the safety of the
staff and animals at the shelter; and
WHEREAS,the City will be exploring grant opportunities for longer-term animal shelter
relocation and/or improvement efforts; and
WHEREAS,the Seward animal shelter is in need of general repairs including,but not
limited to, installation of outdoor electric outlets,temporary heating improvements,plumbing
repair's, installation of a wireless interne connection for security cameras, improved flooring, and
roofing repairs.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD,ALASKA that:
Section 1. The City Manager is hereby authorized to expend up to $20,000 for Seward
Animal Shelter repairs.
Section 2. Funding in the amount of$20,000 is hereby appropriated from the General Fund
undesignated reserves account no.01000-0000-3400 to the animal shelter repairs account no.01000-
1212-7216.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward, Alaska,this 13th
day of February, 2017.

Agenda Item: Seward Animal Shelter Improvements
` BACKGROUND & JUSTIFICATION:
The Administration has received numerous calls requesting help for general repairs to the Seward
Animal Shelter. The shelter is in need of repairs including,but not limited to, installation of outdoor
electric outlets,temporary heating, plumbing repairs, installation of a wireless internet connection for
security cameras, flooring improvements, and roofing repairs.
The Administration is requesting an appropriation for improvements not to exceed $20,000 and will
continue to explore grant opportunities for additional repairs and/or a longer-term shelter solution.
INTENT: To improve the Seward Animal Shelter for the safety of both citizens and animals.
