HomeMy WebLinkAbout01232017 City Council Laydowns 112411 StAbrvi.rkel by Kenai Peninsula Economic Development- Industry Outlook Forum (11 Jan 2017) ryQ Borough Mayor Mike Navarre opened with a summary of Peninsula Cities. Named projects, including Seward's SMIC project. He talked about Borough IT projects, building renovation hopes (admin building from 1971 needs new boilers). Talked about the land fill expansion for a 3rd cell, voted in by votes last Fall and a $40 Mil hospital expansion. Feels we can ride out tough times with our diverse economy and some change. State Labor Department, Alyssa Shanks Rodrigues- Borough's gross taxable sales are declining. $1.3 bill less.... Predicts more people will come to the Peninsula for jobs (Kenai), with 60% labor employment. Have lost 3700 jobs in oil industry over recent years, however. Pamela Parker"Everything Bagels" - Need to train young people to get into entrepreneurial careers. Not everyone needs to go to collage PANEL - Gary Turner Kenai Pen College- Declining enrollment in 2014. However, student number up in 2016, but credits enrolled lower. More credits than Juneau campas. People need to know financial aid is available. Cathy LeCompte AVTEC - 90% completion and placement. Welding is big; need more stations. Need healthcare component back.... More marketing is needed. But took a hit in the admin services, which then feeds into a cyclical problem with numbers, etc. Bob Hammer construction Sean Dusek KPBSC -worried about budget. Facing shortage of teachers. Happy that Soldotna had the Alaska Teacher of the year, and of course Seward's Stephanie Cronan was the alternate. Rachel OBrien Depart of Labor- Peninsula Job Fair March 22 Keith Meyer Alaska Gasoline Development Corporation LNG Update Need to be up and running by 2023. We have customers, Japan used to take 100%, but now zip. Sarah Leonard ATIA 40,000 jobs in tourism But industry is taking a budget hit, just over$1 mil budget. No more hard copy travel planner. Intern'l travel will double, with trends in adventure, culinary, multigenerational and Chinese travel. Shannon Davis KPTI Seward saw a 5.6% increase in sale tax 2016. 25% of Borough sales tax income is from tourism. Deborah Nyquist- Kenaitze Indian Tribe; presentation of their services in Kenai Rick Ross- Community Health Task Force-A 14 mos study showed a merging of three Pen hospitals would not benefit Seward. DETOX center is a problem. Ellen Adlam - Blue Moose Healing Hearts; Bed and Biscuit. Peninsula has a high percentage of VETS that need assistance Brandi Holmdahl - Borough Assembly & Fish Update; Seward is#1 black cod in world. East coast wants farmed fish because they can trace"shelf life" of the fish. 93% of AK fish goes to foreign countries. A lot to China; none to Russia. Higher technology for fishermen will eventually produce a higher price. Kara Moriarty - Alaska Oil and Gas Assc - Report to Council 23 JANUARY 2017 Seward Chamber of Commerce, CVB Cindy Clock Because the Chamber Board of Directors is a dedicated group that wish to be the best they can be, Dennis McMillian of Foraker was brought back to Seward last week for a "New Year, let's kick it off right" Strategic Planning & Board Training session. Out of that came two goals for 2017: 1. Work in partnership with the City on issues like Climate Change, Housing, Education and Community Interaction. 2. Organizational Effectiveness concentrating on issues like HR and better data reporting for detailed indicators of success. AK Dispatch News is having a bit of a problem with their printer so they're hiring an outside printer for 15,000 Seward Destination Guides to be delivered to us by the end of the month - first week of February. All expenses will be paid by AK Dispatch in an effort to keep us loyal. Remainder of our 90K will go to print in April (at AK Dispatch News) Okay, now I'm going to scoop myself `cause this comes out in the eNewsletter tomorrow O . . . Co-op Marketing at Denver Travel Show TRAVELS ADVENTURE SHOW. The Seward Chamber will be participating in the 2017 Denver Travel Adventure Show in March. Only one representative from each company allowed in the booth at one time, maximum three participants, first come basis. 100 Rack Cards/Brochure display participation at show also available. At the KPTMC (Kenai Peninsula Tourism Marketing Council) Board Retreat on Friday, Exec Director Sharron Davis shared the 2nd & 3rd Qtr sales tax numbers on tourism related industries. In 2015 Seward numbers were up 15% over 2014 - and 2016 numbers showed Seward up again by 5.5% over 2015 — leading the peninsula communities by a good margin, with over $45,000,000.00 in primary tourism sales. On the pie chart you can see that Accommodations has the largest piece of pie. KPB Assemblyman Dale Bagley has a seat on the KPTMC board now and we feel very fortunate to have him. He is pro-tourism and like me, seems a bit confused as to why anyone would not be, especially those in leadership roles. With the departure of Brandii Holmdahl from the Assembly, it's critical that Seward replace her with someone that will represent us well. I am working closely with Yvette Galbraith on the 2017 marketing strategy; as a matter of fact we just today met with the Halibut Tournament committee to discuss the brand new Tourney event guide coming out on May 151 both in print and electronically. The format will closely follow the successful Silver Salmon Derby Guide. Ad opportunities abound, please call us if you're interested © Chamber Luncheon this Friday will feature Rob Lewis and DeRay Jones. They will attempt to educate us on the new Kenai Peninsula Borough Tax Code changes. Noon at the Breeze Inn Mt.
