HomeMy WebLinkAbout01222018 City Council Laydowns re,v-Idcv Report to COUNCIL January 22, 2018 /801 22. Seward Chamber of Commerce, CVB Cindy Clock You've most likely all read about the Community Awards dinner last Friday evening — and thanks very much to everyone that could make it. One of my favorite quotes was from Mike Ritz, owner of Alaska Marine Coatings, LLC and winner of"Business of the Year". Mike said "I've basically got the temperament of a surly 14 year-old boy and I never would've made it without the help and advice of people like Blaine Bardarson and Tom &Joe Tougas". Well said, Mike! Don't we all really"make it" only with the help of others? And I'm sure our new "Person of the Year", Jean Bardarson would quickly acknowledge that the long list of contributions she's made as City Council Woman & Mayor - she did not do on her own. City Admin, the Seward Chamber's EcDev focus groups and the citizens of Seward all helped to some degree with these achievements. For great recaps of the evening please check out Seward City News and the Seward Journal. At the Chamber Board of Director's meeting last week, the topic of preventing shop lifting and theft was introduced. When we bring back Don Krohn, FNBA Security Officer for a member education seminar, we'll likely try to have someone address the shoplifting issue. (The date is not yet set) It's looking like both Chamber Staff: Jen and Kris will enroll in the Small Business Management Class beginning March 6 and lasting for 10 weeks. Tom Tougas, along with a small team of local business owners and business managers, will share course content and personal insight as it relates to business management and leadership. Call 224-4378 (Hertz Office) to sign up. Be quick, only 20 spots available! We are all about planning for Spring — the Sports & Rec Shows, Rotary Conference May 18 — 20, coinciding with Seward Harbor Opening Weekend & the Mermaid Festival. Chamber staff is working with the Harbormaster's Office on the Statewide Conference Oct 8 — 12. We'll be hosting the registration, signing up hotels and lodging accommodations and coordinating the event guide. • SMIC Group - Ribbon Cutting event in April • Energy Group - Heat Pumps & the October Energy Fair • Seward Business Network— Second Saturdays, Co-op Marketing Polar Bear Jump Saturday, Jan 27th Chamber Lunches: Jan 26 — Doug Capra, Rockwell Kent Anniversary in Seward 2018 - 2020 Feb 9 — Alaska Chamber, Worker's Comp Reform Feb 23 —TBA Mar 9 — Summer Lazenby with KPTMC Mar 23 — Tara Riemer, ASLC 20th Anniversary In my State of the Chamber address on Jan 12th I spoke about the McDowell Group's AK Visitors Statistics Program results from summer of 2016.
