Just a fence and possible picnic table, trash cans and a porta potty, and poop station. • Great for tourists and a training facility for any dog trainers that would like to hold a class • A dog wash for fundraising • Possibly extra income to rent the area for dog activities, agility contests, etc. the possibilities are endless. • And hopefully could reduce the problems with off leash dogs and tourist aggravation on the waterfront area, harbor area and over all could reduce the mess of poop not being cleaned up. Advocate and advertise to use the dog park for your off-leash dogs and keep a cleaner city. Emergency evacuation needs in the community • I attended the borough workshop 7 years ago for the emergency evac of communities; the goal was to set up a working plan for the community animals during an emergency. The other shelters on the borough could focus on the community and helping with the needs during an emergency. Which in the case of the Seward shelter due to location would not really apply. • We must evacuate the animals in our building, therefore we can't use the facility to help house the lost or misplaced animals during an emergency • We are not going to be able to immediately set up and maintain an emergency facility for people who need housing for their animals. We do not at the present location have the storage needed to keep the emergency supplies to set up such a sight in the first place. Building needs • We need a room for the recent intakes to be held, evaluated and quarantined 5 -10 cats and up to 5 dogs, puppies etc. • We need a office that can be private from the front door to conduct the confidential issues that come up • A bathroom with sink and area to clean up. We do at times deal with issues of disease and need to prevent cross contaminations • A laundry, grooming and exam area separate and private for the safety of visitors and shelter animals • Our greatest challenge is housing the cats that are surrendered or abandoned. We only have room for 12 comfortably with the cage room we have; the cattery has provided a much-needed space increase and area for visiting with the adoptable social healthy cats. An increased cage area for up to 20 kennels would be enough to hold the other cats until they are placed or can integrate into the cattery area • The dog population at the shelter has dropped in the past year but as a rule I feel that 10 kennels with in indoor out door access would be sufficient. With the appropriate design you can double the use of 10 kennels. It is always wise to consider the needs of a growing community. These are just the basic needs that have presented themselves with our current building. The improvements that have been made to the facility are very appreciated and have improved the quality of life for the shelter animals and staff. The basic building issues that only a newer building could provide are a better drainage system for the floor. The present floor drain is in constant need and repair. The ventilation system in the building which is now adequate but could be improved. This is essential for the health of animals and humans alike. The existing building has 7 power outlets, with office equipment, washer dryer, grooming, and cleaning equipment all being used on a daily basis this can come up a little short. We appreciate the council taking time to consider the need for a new shelter, as well as everything that has been done to keep the present building up and running. The shelter is a gathering place for the community of pet lovers as well as providing education for future pet owners. And it has become a popular place for our summer workers and visitors who were unable to bring their own pets to Alaska and are able to still enjoy the love of a pet. - S U'►?.l )0 Op-i-n 0 ?
