RESOLUTION 2002-020
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, NAMING THE FUTURE PARK TO BE LOCATED ON CITY-
OWNED PROPERTY AT THE CORNER OF FOURTH AVENUE AND
ADAMS STREET KAWABE PARK
WHEREAS, following city acquisition of the three Original Townsite lots on the comer of
Fourth Avenue and Adams Street for development of a bus pullout, shelter, public restrooms, and
park area, the City Council requested that the Planning and Zoning Commission initiate the process
of naming the future park; and
WHEREAS, last year Council approved a conceptual design for the future park, and it is the
City's goal to complete the park development for Seward's Centennial in 2003; and
WHEREAS, the Planning and Zoning Commission requested nominations from the public to
assist in identifying a name for the park; and
WHEREAS, both the Historic Preservation Commission and the Planning and Zoning
Commission have recommended that the City Council name the future park Kawabe Park because
the Kawabes were pioneering businessmen, did much for international relations, owned property
within and adjacent to the park, and had a business on the park property at one time; and
WHEREAS, the Planning and Zoning Commission further recommended that an
informational plaque on Harry Kawabe be incorporated into the park development.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The Council hereby names the future city park to be developed on the comer of
Fourth Avenue and Adams Street Kawabe Park after Seward's pioneer businessman Harry Sotaro
Kawabe.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward, Alaska, this 25th
day of February, 2002.
