Sponsored by: Schaefermever CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION NO. 90-002 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, OPPOSING THE SEASONAL SHUT DOWN OF M.V. TUSTUMENA FERRY SERVICE BETWEEN SELDOVIA, HOMER, SEWARD AND KODIAK WHEREAS, the city of Seward is the homeport of the M. V. Tustumena; and WHEREAS, the Tustumena Ferry serves Seldovia, Seward, Homer and Kodiak and is the basic means for transporting residents as well as all types of supplies and materials between these com- munities; and WHEREAS, the legislature cut the Alaska Marine Highway System budget, causing ferry service to be discontinued beyond its normal overhaul time during this winter; and WHEREAS, the Alaska Marine Highway System plans to pull the Tustumena from service for eight months next year for a complete remodel; and WHEREAS, this discontinued service will cause serious transportation and shipping problems for the communities it serves; and WHEREAS, The Alaska Marine Highway System has solicited statements of interest for replacement ferry serv1ce for Homer/Sel- dovia and Homer/Kodiak/Port Lions but has not included service from Seward in the solicitation. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: Section 1. The city of Seward supports the supplemental funding request for FY'90 by the Alaska Marine Highway System to avoid the anticipated loss of service this winter. Section 2. The city urges the Alaska Marine Highway to find a replacement vessel for use which includes Seward while the Tustumena is being remodeled from October 1, through June 1, 1991. The clerk is hereby directed to send a copy of this resolution to all state legislators who represent the affected communities; all members of the House and Senate Finance commit- -1- . . . This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. PASSED AND APPROVED by the city Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this 8th day of January, 1990.
