<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />sponsored by: Schaefermever <br /> <br />CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA <br />RESOLUTION NO. 90-003 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF SEWARD, ALASKA, IN SUPPORT OF THE <br />FORMATION OF A CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE <br />FOR THE COOK INLET OIL INDUSTRY <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the grounding of the EXXON VALDEZ on March 24, 1989, <br />created an oil spill which affected over 1000 miles of Alaskan <br />coast including the shores of Resurrection Bay and the fishing <br />grounds of the Seward fishing fleet: and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the grounding of the GLACIER BAY on July 2, 1987, <br />created an oil spill which affected the salmon fishing season in <br />Cook Inlet: and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the current self monitoring program of the oil <br />industry in Cook Inlet is not working as demonstrated by tankers <br />being allowed to enter Cook Inlet: and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the ECO report commissioned by the State oil Spill <br />Commission lists Cook Inlet as the most dangerous transportation <br />corridor in Alaska and the most likely place for the next major oil <br />spill: and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, there were over 200 oil spills reported to ADEC or <br />the U.S. Coast Guard on the Kenai Peninsula and in Cook Inlet last <br />year: and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, there was formed a Regional citizen's Advisory <br />Committee in June, 1989, for oil Industry issues in Prince William <br />Sound and this committee has already shown great worth in par- <br />ticipating in the creation of the new Alyeska Tanker Oil Spill <br />Prevention and Contingence Plan: <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: <br /> <br />Section 1. The City of <br />citizens Advisory Committee <br />patterned after the committee <br /> <br />Seward supports the formation of a <br />for the Cook Inlet oil Industry <br />organized for Prince william Sound. <br /> <br />Section 2. The new citizens Advisory Committee should be <br />funded by direct donations from the Oil Industry which extracts and <br />ships oil from or into the region. <br /> <br />Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon <br />its adoption. <br /> <br />-1- <br />
