<br />Sponsored by Staff <br /> <br />CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA <br />HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2S=ll <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION <br />COMMISSION, SUPPORTING AN APPLICATION FOR A FEDERAL GRANT TO <br />SURVEY, MAP AND COMPLETE AN HISTORICAL INVENTORY OF THE SEWARD <br />CITY CEMETERY <br /> <br />WHEREAS, pursuant to the National Park Service Historic Preservation Act of 1966, <br />certain federal share matching grants for historic preservation projects are available to certified <br />local governments; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, there is a public need to survey, map and inventory the burial sites within <br />the Seward City Cemetery as there have been no accurate mapping or burial records maintained; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Office of History and Archaeology has stated that the proposed project <br />to survey the Seward City Cemetery, is eligible for historic preservation program funding; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City Council has reviewed the application prepared by the Community <br />Development Department and approved Resolution No. 95-144, authorizing the City Manager to <br />apply for a matching grant to survey, map and inventory the burial sites within the Seward City <br />Cemetery; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, one of the goals of the draft Seward Historic Preservation Plan is to, <br />"identify and preserve the diverse aspects of Seward's history including sites, buildings, trails, <br />landscapes, archives, transportation facilities, downtown districts and artifacts;" and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, an objective of the draft Seward Historic Preservation Plan has identified the <br />need to rehabilitate and map cemeteries in the Seward area. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation <br />Commission that: <br /> <br />Section 1. The Seward Historic Preservation Commission supports an application for <br />a federal matching grant to survey, map and complete an historical inventory of the Seward City <br />Cemetery. <br />
