HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes1995-011 Sponsored by Staff CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION RESOLUTION NO. 2S=ll A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION, SUPPORTING AN APPLICATION FOR A FEDERAL GRANT TO SURVEY, MAP AND COMPLETE AN HISTORICAL INVENTORY OF THE SEWARD CITY CEMETERY WHEREAS, pursuant to the National Park Service Historic Preservation Act of 1966, certain federal share matching grants for historic preservation projects are available to certified local governments; and WHEREAS, there is a public need to survey, map and inventory the burial sites within the Seward City Cemetery as there have been no accurate mapping or burial records maintained; and WHEREAS, the Office of History and Archaeology has stated that the proposed project to survey the Seward City Cemetery, is eligible for historic preservation program funding; and WHEREAS, the City Council has reviewed the application prepared by the Community Development Department and approved Resolution No. 95-144, authorizing the City Manager to apply for a matching grant to survey, map and inventory the burial sites within the Seward City Cemetery; and WHEREAS, one of the goals of the draft Seward Historic Preservation Plan is to, "identify and preserve the diverse aspects of Seward's history including sites, buildings, trails, landscapes, archives, transportation facilities, downtown districts and artifacts;" and WHEREAS, an objective of the draft Seward Historic Preservation Plan has identified the need to rehabilitate and map cemeteries in the Seward area. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation Commission that: Section 1. The Seward Historic Preservation Commission supports an application for a federal matching grant to survey, map and complete an historical inventory of the Seward City Cemetery. Seward Historic Preservation Commission Resolution No. 95-11 Section 2. If the City of Seward is awarded the grant for the proposed project, the Historic Preservation Commission will assist by providing an historical perspective of the cemetery and information on the individuals buried there, review all documents, and recommend historically significant burial sites for placement on the Alaska Heritage Resources Survey. Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. PASSED AND APPROVED by the Seward Historic Preservation Commission this 13th day of December, 1995.
