<br />Sponsored by Staff <br /> <br />CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA <br />HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION <br />RESOLUTION NO. 98-01 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION <br />COMMISSION, RECOMMENDING THAT THE CITY COUNCIL <br />ESTABLISH A SEWARD CENTENNIAL PLANNING COMMITTEE <br /> <br />WHEREAS, on August 28, 1903, John Ballaine's landing party arrived on the shores of <br />Resurrection Bay from the steamer SANTA ANA and began construction of the town of Seward; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the year 2003 marking the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of <br />Seward is less than five years away; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Seward's centennial presents an opportunity for community celebrations and <br />educational activities focused on the history of Seward; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, it will require a great deal of planning, promotion and local support to <br />prepare for Seward's 2003 Centennial; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, it is not too soon to establish a committee of representatives from the <br />community to begin planning for Seward's Centennial in 2003. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation <br />Commission that: <br /> <br />Section 1. It is hereby recommended that the City Council appoint an ad hoc Seward <br />Centennial Committee to begin planning Seward's one hundredth anniversary. <br /> <br />Section 2.
