HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes1996-001 Sponsored by: Staff CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION RESOLUTION NO. 96-01 A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION, RECOMMENDING ADOPTION OF THE SEWARD COMMUNITY CEMETERIES MANAGEMENT ACTION PLAN WHEREAS, the City of Seward,the Pioneers, Oddfellows,Masons and American Legion each own or operate cemeteries; and WHEREAS,there are no established codes authorizing the management nor regulations guiding the use of the city cemetery; and WHEREAS, there are no burial permits required,inadequate mapping and minimal burial records associated with the community' s cemeteries; and WHEREAS, a properly managed and maintained cemetery reflects well on community image and provides peace of mind for relatives of deceased friends an family; and WHEREAS, cemeteries are an important part of our history and culture in that epitaphs on the markers reveal important genealogical information which may be lost in other records; and WHEREAS, a "cemetery action plan" has evolved from numerous public hearings, meetings with cemetery owners, direct contact with cemetery users and other interested parties. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation Commission that: Section 1. It has reviewed the "The Seward Community Cemeteries Management Action Plan," and recommends adoption and implementation by the Seward City Council. Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. PASSED AND APPROVED by the Seward Historic Preservation Commission this 24th day of July, 1996.
