HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
RESOLUTION NO. .28:03
A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION
COMMISSION, RECOMMENDING THAT THE CITY COUNCIL PLACE
THE HISTORIC METHODIST AND LUTHERAN CHURCH (RESURRECT
ART COFFEE HOUSE) ON THE SEWARD REGISTER OF HISTORIC
PLACES
WHEREAS, City Council Ordinance No. 95-10, established the Seward Register of
Historic Places in order to locally recognize properties important in Seward's history; and
WHEREAS, an application to place the historic Methodist and Lutheran Church (Resurrect
Art Coffee House) on the Seward Register of Historic Places has been prepared for review and
recommendation to the City Council; and
WHEREAS, the church was constructed at the corner of Third Avenue and Church Street
on Lots 31-33, Block 15, Original Townsite of Seward, by the Methodist congregation in 1916;
and
WHEREAS, following its construction, the Seward Methodists occupied the church for
29 years; and
WHEREAS, Lutheran services were held in the building from 1950 to 1993; and
WHEREAS, the structure is the second oldest church building in Seward, and IS
significant for its long association with two of Seward's most active church congregations.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation
Commission that:
Section 1. The Historic Methodist and Lutheran Church (Resurrect Art Coffee House) is
eligible for placement on the Seward Register of Historic Places as a property associated with
historic events or persons of local and state significance.
Section 2. It is hereby recommended that the City Council list the Historic Methodist and
Lutheran Church (Resurrect Art Coffee House) building on the Seward Register of Historic
Places.

Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the Seward Historic Preservation Commission this 21st
day of April, 1999.
